Apple leaves US Chamber of Commerce over climate clash

WASHINGTON (AFP) -

Computing giant Apple defected from the US Chamber of Commerce, as a growing rift emerges over the group's opposition to tough climate change rules, according to a letter.

The firm "supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the chamber at odds with us in this effort," saidApple vice president Catherine Novelli, on Tuesday.

Apple is the fourth major US corporation to walk out of the group over its stance on climate change. Pacific Gas and Electricity,PNM Resources and Exelon have taken similar moves.

Sporting goods titan Nike dropped its responsibilities on the chamber's board but remains a member.

"We would prefer the chamber take a more progressive stance on this critical issue and play a constructive role in addressing theclimate crisis," said the Apple letter dated October 5, published in US media.

"However, because the Chamber's position differs so sharply with Apple's, we have decided to resign our membership effective immediately."

Chamber president Thomas Donohue said Apple did not understand the chamber's goals.

"I am sorry to learn of Apple's resignation," Donohue wrote in a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

"The US Chamber of Commerce continues to support strong federal legislation and a binding international agreement to reduce carbon emissions and address climate change."

Donohue said the chamber opposed a draft climate change bill currently before the US Senate that sets a target of reducinggreenhouse gases from 2005 levels by 20 percent by 2020.

The House of Representatives approved its version in June, setting a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, and 83 percent by 2050.

The bill "will cause Americans to lose their jobs and shift greenhouse emissions overseas, negating potential climate benefits," Donohue said, citing "numerous" studies.

"An effective climate change response must include all major CO2 emitting economies, promote new technologies, emphasize efficiency, ensure affordable energy for families and businesses, and defend American jobs while returning our economy to prosperity," argued the chamber chief.

The chamber claims to be the world's largest business federation with three million members.

"While we'll continue to represent the broad majority of our membership on this goal, we recognize that there are some companies who stand to gain more than others with the current options on the table," said chamber spokesman Eric Wohlschlegel.

Swine Flu..... This is serious! Learn more about the symptoms

Flu
Swine influenza is endemic in pigs

Swine influenza (also called swine flu, hog flu, and pig flu) refers to influenza caused by those strains of influenza virus that usually infect pigs and are called swine influenza virus (SIV).[1] Swine influenza is common in pigs in the midwestern United States (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe (including the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Italy), Kenya, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and other parts of eastern Asia.[1]

Transmission of swine influenza virus from pigs to humans is not common. When it is transmitted, it does not always cause human influenza; often, the only sign of infection is the presence of antibodies, detectable only by laboratory tests. When transmission results in influenza in a human, it is called zoonotic swine flu. People who work with pigs, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of catching swine flu. However, only about fifty such transmissions have been recorded since the mid-20th Century, when identification of influenza subtypes became possible. (Importantly, eating pork does not pose a risk of infection.) Rarely, these strains of swine flu can pass from human to human. In humans, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.

The 2009 flu outbreak in humans that is widely known as "swine flu" is due to an apparently virulent new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that was produced by reassortment from one strain of human influenza virus, one strain of avian influenza virus, and two separate strains of swine influenza. The origin of this new strain is unknown, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in pigs.[2] It passes with apparent ease from human to human, an ability attributed to an as-yet unidentified mutation.[3] This 2009 H1N1 strain causes the normal symptoms of influenza, such as fever, coughing and headache.[4]

This is what I'm talking about...

This past Friday, Mercy College held an Environmental Consortium for students contemplating a “green” future and desiring a career with sustainability in mind.

Universities and colleges within the Hudson Valley were invited to participate in this student summit, where Kevin Doyle, Principal of Green Economy, opened the gathering with a pep talk about becoming active in our globally distressed situation. “This is not an option anymore, it’s not an option not to know [that] we need to take actions that are needed to be taken,” says Mr. Doyle.

The participants were able to mingle with exhibitors as well as each other, plus spend some quality one-on-one time with Mr. Doyle, a fountain of green ideology. “The process of six or seven billion people changing little things in their life isn’t going to do it, it needs to start at a large institutional level, with systems being set up to where these things aren’t allowed anymore, where legislature is written in to solve problems. One isn’t allowed to choose whether or not they’d like to commit a felony, it should be impossible to be allowed,” Mr. Doyle explains.

Funneling students into eco-friendly occupations—as opposed to encouraging a light bulb to be switched or a power strip to be unplugged—enables change on a much grander scale. To introduce career-bound students to different possibilities in the green work force benefits not only the employers and employees, but also everyone in existence, while concerned, collegiate problem-solvers are getting more and more anxious to save the world.

Production Bio

In today's world of digital gadgetry and the surplus of reality television booming through plasma screens and hi-tech cell phones, it seems everyone is a producer, artist, actor, manager, record executive, label owner; and sometimes, all of the above. Once upon a time, talent and a little luck were the only requisites for a successful career in the entertainment biz. Nowadays, the once simple task of identifying a true gem has subsequently become much more daunting amongst the sea of super shiny zirconias, all passing themselves off as genuine diamonds. The fact still remains that when you pit a true artist against one that's been manufactured as a commercial cash cow, the real McCoy is an obvious stand out.

There are those who subscribe to the school of thought that everything in life has a rhyme and a reason. DJ Journey, the bi-coastal triple-threat from the Windy City is definitely one of them. Well beyond his years, this musical prodigy witnessed the power of music first-hand as a child, sitting on his mother's living room floor.  It was in this space that Journey recalls the way the music his mother played affected everything, from her emotions & her mood; even taking on a life of its own as a real-time soundtrack to their everyday lives. "My mother was a music collector and I remember how music made her feel. It made her think and explore. It made her a better person," says Journey. This eclectic DJ, Remixer & Producer is hard pressed to name a short list of specific influences that point to his cinematic production style, but when asked where the unpredictability of his music stems from, the jazz fusion band, The Crusaders, rolls off his tongue with ease. "The Crusaders music had no beginning and no ending. This is really prevalent in the structure of my songs."

As a high school sophomore, Journey's marriage to music became official when he was gifted his first set of decks as a birthday present. The DJ persona fit his outgoing personality seamlessly, and success soon found him. With a promising radio show and a high demand for his skills as a party rocker in Chi-Town, it wouldn't be long before the West Coast's promises of prestige and flashing lights would bait him out of his backyard, leaping off to the City of Angels to join the Power 106 team, as an on-air personality & DJ. While the relationship fizzled quickly, the geographic relocation sparked a shift in Journey's mind.

Where in Chicago, he had been the escape for others; Los Angeles became the sand box that would allow him to create music that would provide an escape for him. It was here that Journey realized, "the studios are programming the minds of the world!"

Of his own accord, Journey describes himself as quite a complex character. And it's in the layers of his complexities, that one truly begins to understand his music. With a role model like Quincy Jones, who took huge risks sonically and studied symphony orchestras in London, listeners will find brush strokes of electronic, experimental and orchestral fusions with a dash of hip hop influences in Journey's picturesque productions. "These are compositions of my life and I just want a reaction out of the music that I'm producing," he says. And while most might assume it takes a Bentley's worth of studio equipment to create such grandiose sounds, Journey draws from his past, reminiscing on how his mother had very little means but always showed him how much they truly had. Set in his ways, his minimalist attitude carries into his selection of weaponry. Armed with Reason, Garage Band & Ableton Live, the only outboard audio gear he uses in the lab are an MPC2000 sequencer, a Mo' Phat sound module, the Oxygen 8 Midi Keyboard and an Akai MPDP24 Midi Control Pad.

As a DJ with an impressive client list that includes Adidas, MTV, Red Bull, Ed Hardy & Fred Siegel just to name a few, Journey is setting his sights on the film & television industry as his next musical conquest. Currently working with blooming artists Ryan Gordy and Jesse Hart, it shouldn't come as a shock, should you happen to find his name on a Silver Screen in your city in the very near future. His next calculated move is to work with one of the top agencies in Hollywood to market his unique sound & carve out a role for himself alongside the greats of scores and soundtracks. L.A. is known for its brutal turnover rate and conniving "every man for himself" mentality.  But the spiritually grounded, analytically complex DJ Journey knows that everything matters and in his own words, "Good things come to those who create!"

The beginning of the end.

With every focus on popular culture, there needs to be at least a bit of retrospection to aid in the understanding of these current events. With that said, I’d like to take a minute to dig up the past, running through a monumental time in history that is typically filed away under “old exam material” in our memory. This arguably progressive movement changed the way people lived, and with a complete 180 of production methods occurring in a less developed time—such as the 18th century— the possibility of another change-over is so totally do-able. We did it before, we can do it again.

Now bear with me...

So I was learning about the Industrial Revolution in Roots: History the other day. I mean, the lecture was filled with thought-provoking concepts and ideas, yet I could not get over the feeling that this whole happening was the foundation of our current crisis in which we find ourselves.

Alright, now the birth of the steam engine in England was the first to screw us. Granted, this was a very helpful development, considering the enablement of boats to move up-stream and trains to move cross-country.  It sped up land and sea travel, with no worries of wind nor high-jackers to interfere with trade; the hot money-makin’ means in the day. Markets were connected and we were getting more goods more quickly. Holla.

But as people were applying their science and logic of the Enlightenment to mass production, factories that were normally powered by water or horses were now running on burnt coal. Textile factories were hip. With machines making things instead of people making things, cotton could be spun into thread 200 times faster, thread could be woven into clothing a hell of a lot faster, and with the use of chlorine and sulfuric acid to bleach these clothes instead of the traditional buttermilk soak and sunbath, they were all fresh and bought up faster. More adversely, cotton had to be picked faster, more slaves had to be used to pick this cotton, and since slave importation had since been outlawed, the breeding of slaves began to take place, sparking the internal slave trade.

On the up side, due to this mass production, poorer people could afford more than one outfit. A man could have more than two pairs of shoes. A woman would have a wardrobe instead of just the “everyday outfit” and the “Sunday best.” How bourgie. Affordability and availability for everything fueled the movement, and the scent of materialism was beginning to find its way into the nose of the middle-class by the day.

Urban growth was massive—machines had to fit into city factories as opposed to rural houses—but sewer systems and hygienic education were not. Human waste flowed freely in the streets, those chemicals from bleaching clothes were dumped into local rivers, as was the coal waste, and disease spread like Smuckers.  Ever heard of the term “Mad Hatter?” This was not just the crazy, tea-obsessed, hyperactive character from Alice in Wonderland, but a term coined to describe the men who made hats, treated them with mercury, then went mad with dementia.

Oh, they dumped that in the water too.

Paris lost 18,000 people to disease alone in 1832. The average age of death for a laborer was 15. Urban slums developed, claiming sons eight inches shorter than those of the elite. Women and children were slaving away. Even after a series of laws had passed, nine yr. olds were still working at least ten hours a day.

Lumber to support the weight of coal mines led to deforestation on a devastating scale.

Deforestation led to soil erosion.

Soil erosion led to food decline.

People were hungry, sick, and dying.

There were no environmental rules.

It was capitalism without any government regulation.

Guys, I only bring this up because although we really shot ourselves in the foot with this one, I’m inspired that we were once able to re-vamp our whole way of doing business, and really turned everything on its ass at one point. We might have turned it the wrong way, but we actually turned it. We were less-educated, less-connected, and less-aware of what was going on, yet we still changed everything. Who’s to say we can’t flip it again?

I guess just sit on that for today.

Thanks for reading.

A special thanks to Dr. Droubie for the lecture haha.

DJ Journey Does Greenhouse!

We said it was going to happen....and it did!

Having his sights set on Greenhouse since he heard about the eco-friendly club months ago, DJ Journey finally got his chance to show this exclusive venue what he's all about as he took to the turntables Wednesday night.

Energy efficient lighting, vodka made from sustainable ingredients and chia pet like plants encased  in glass tables are just a few of the cool components to this forward thinking club.  Adding to the allure is a state of the art sound system and a crowd that knows how to party...green style of course.

This particular night DJ Journey was spinning for the the fashion world as Nylon Magazine and Live Mechanics teamed up for New York Fashion week. By 12am the club was packed and the people were enjoying the versatile beats of this DJ with a cause. Feeling at home at Greenhouse, DJ was in the groove and easily transitioned between hip-hop, rock and electro, keeping everyone pleased.
You can be sure to see this DJ in Greenhouse again soon! Check out the blog for upcoming events at Greenhouse and other events!

TACO TUESDAY

I found this little gem ingredient in my new vegan cookbook my grandma gave me for Christmas.

TVP
Textured Vegetable Protein

Great source of protein, and for those who want to try something new apart from regular tofu or fake chicken tacos, cook it up! It's the closest you'll get to ground beef that isn't pre-package fakey meat. It's lighter in color and weight, but lighter in your stomach once you're finished.

So take this recipe, call a friend or boo over, and have a feast tonight.

Ashton

½ cup onion, finely diced

1 ½ tsp. olive oil

1 TB. garlic, minced

1 ½ tsp. chili powder

½ tsp. ground cumin

½ dried oregano

¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper

1/8 tsp. cayenne

1 (14 oz.) can crushed tomatoes

¾ cup TVP granules

¼ cup water

1 ½ tsp. tamari

AT LEAST 2 taco shells or tortillas

Shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, salsa, vegan cheese, or other toppings of choice

*** When I made these I just used a seasoning packet with no meat, dairy, or egg stuff in it, in place of all those spices. And I don’t own tamari, so… I guess you can leave that out too if necessary.

1.     In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, sauté onion and olive oil, stirring often, for 2 minutes. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin, oregano, black pepper, and cayenne, and sauté for 1 minute.

2.     Add crushed tomatoes, TVP, water, and tamari, and stir well to combine. Reduce heat to low, and simmer, stirring often, for 10 to 12 minutes or until most of the liquid is absorbed and TVP is fully rehydrated. Taste and adjust seasonings as desired. Remove from heat.

3.      Meanwhile, you should be baking the taco shells if they need it.

4.     Make a plate and add the toppings! Woo woo!

LISTEN RESPONSIBLY AND RECYCLE THE BEAT

Collect, sort, reprocess and re-introduce to the world. This is the basic system to recycling an item- it's also DJ Journey's method to creating those hit signature mix tapes known as RECYCLE THE BEAT. Taking the concept straight out of a "How to Recycle" guide, Journey grabs original items, and in his case, songs, sorts through what he believes have potential to be reworked and creates a new product –giving old-school hits new future life.

The "Recycle The Beat" vision was introduced to pay tribute and remind people of the importance of reusing, and show that just because something has served it's original purpose doesn't mean you should "trash" it. Take for instance a HOT original song: you play it, play it and play it until it's played out. Then you're done with it, and it's on to the next new hit. Of course there are those originals that no one will ever get tired of, but for the majority of songs this isn't the case. The same can be said for that cell phone you once couldn't tear yourself away from that now isn't up to par with the new blackberry you're dying to get. Buy it…just be sure to recycle the old one. Yes, you can recycle your cell phone! It's not all paper and plastic anymore, there are an array of items from printers to kitchen appliances that can be recycled and re-invented as opposed to letting it wind up in a lonely landfill. You can even take those neon blue skinny jeans, circa 2006 and bring them to a trading post or thrift store and exchange them for cash or credit. Someone else will find a way to make them stylish and then you can both feel good knowing they got more than a years worth of wear.

DJ Journey's Recycle The Beat mix tape is in line with that same idea and although "recycling" songs may not actually help save the planet, it's the message behind the idea that should really hit home. Re-introducing the original recycle re-mix with added bonus mixes, DJ Journey breathes new life into hit songs of all genres. Everything from 80's rock to 90 rap is found on this mix, all with added beats, scratching, and new artist's music. As always, DJ Journey delivers on Recycle The Beat, using his signature style, that always includes new slick surprises. This mix is sure to impress, and more importantly, we hope this re-use method will inspire you to grab that stuff you once considered garbage and take it to your nearest recycling center!

The United States of planet Earth?

We've all heard the warnings on the news, seen the documentaries on BBC, Discovery and National Geographic and witnessed first hand the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of catastrophic hurricanes, tsunamis, and volcanoes in the last few years alone.

The question has been- how can we possibly deal effectively with these problems while not compromising the economic well being and global leadership role of our country? The Bush administration made a clear cut decision to put the environment on the back burner based on the false notion that we cannot care effectively for our planet and simultaneously enjoy a healthy, thriving economy.

The truth is actually quite the opposite. After 8 years of war abroad, worldwide economic devastation, and a crippled international reputation, the American people are ready for change. They are ready to work towards achieving the very realistic goal of developing alternatives sources of energy and improving the economic condition of the country.

Former Vice President, Al Gore, spoke to members of congress today about the drastic changes that must take place in the coming years. He addressed some of the most pressing issues-war, national security, and a devastated economy. “As we search for solutions to all three of theses challenges, it is becoming clearer that they are linked by a common thread- our dangerous over-reliance on carbon-based fuels.” And how can we deny the truth of such a powerful statement?

Not only is the cause of our greatest problems our insatiable desire for fossil fuels, but addressing this one issue has the capacity to resolve the other three! Investments in energy efficient products will “create millions of jobs and hasten our economic recovery-while strengthening our national security and beginning to solve the climate crisis.”

So what, you are probably thinking, have we been waiting for! We have been waiting for someone bold enough to educate the public. We’ve been waiting for an administration wise enough to join hands with the international community. We’ve been doing a hell of a lot of waiting and that’s the problem!

Human civilization stands at a “tipping point” and we must reach a new, realistic agreement in Copenhagen that represents REAL change. Let’s get Congress rolling, shall we? Click here to show your support for Obama's new recovery package ladies and gents:
